Before you set off: everything to know to ride prepared — licence, insurance, timing and connectivity, one guide at a time.

Getting around Klook

In Bali, you explore at the pace of the road. The scooter remains king for weaving between rice fields and temples, a self-drive car offers total freedom, and a car with driver takes over for families, groups or the rainy season. Expand each category to compare our recommendations — remember the international licence (category A for two-wheelers), the mandatory helmet and driving on the left.

* Klook affiliate links — at no extra cost to you. Prices are indicative and vary with season and rental duration.

Travel protected Heymondo

Before setting off on Bali's roads, the goal isn't to stack up offers: one clear insurance policy is enough. Heymondo lets you get an international travel insurance quote suited to your trip, with the cover to check before departure: medical expenses, repatriation, luggage, 24/7 assistance and a cancellation option depending on the contract terms and plan chosen.

* Sponsored Heymondo link — cover, limits, cancellation options, covered reasons and exclusions vary by country of residence, destination, duration and plan chosen. Check the official terms before subscribing.

Stay connected Saily

No need to hunt for a local SIM card at the airport or juggle a paper tourist SIM: an eSIM installs in a few minutes before departure and activates the moment you land in Bali. Enough to keep GPS, maps and messaging apps running throughout the road trip, without touching your usual number or roaming fees.

* Sponsored Saily link — data volumes, validity, coverage and eSIM compatibility depend on your phone model and country of residence. Check compatibility before ordering.

Browse securely NordVPN

Hotel, warung and co-working wifi in Bali is convenient but rarely secure, and some banking or streaming apps get fussy once you're abroad. A VPN encrypts your connection on public networks and lets you keep browsing as if you were still at home — handy for checking your bank account, watching your usual shows or simply booking your next stay with peace of mind.

* Sponsored NordVPN link — plans, pricing and device limits vary by subscription length and country of residence. Check the official terms before subscribing.

To explore Bali by scooter, an international driving licence is mandatory, along with suitable insurance. Most of our itinerary roads are rideable on a 125cc automatic scooter. For mountain roads (Munduk, Kintamani, Besakih), choose a scooter in good condition or opt for a car with a driver. Scooter rental: about €6–10/day. Car with driver: €35-50 a day.

Full breakdowns: renting a scooter, international licence and road safety.

The dry season from April to October is ideal for scooter riding. The rainy season (November to March) is acceptable, but mountain roads can be slippery. Full month-by-month breakdown →

Yes, an international licence is legally required in Indonesia — category A for scooters and motorbikes, category B for cars. Without a valid licence, you risk a fine if stopped by police. In France, you apply online on the France Titres (ANTS) website (€7.25). Full guide →

Yes, absolutely. Itineraries labelled “🚗 Car” (Seminyak → Uluwatu and Candidasa → Amed) can absolutely be done by scooter — the roads are rideable and many travellers do exactly that. The “Car” label simply means these routes are particularly well suited to those who prefer not to ride a scooter: longer distances, sometimes busier roads, or the comfort preferred by a family. If you are comfortable on a scooter, all our itineraries are open to you. Scooter rental guide →

It is not a legal requirement, but it is strongly recommended: medical costs abroad, repatriation or lost luggage are not covered by French social security. BaliRoads recommends comparing an offer such as Heymondo and checking in particular the cover applicable to riding a scooter (licence, engine size, exclusions). Road safety guide →

Sanur → Nusa Dua and Canggu → Tanah Lot are the most accessible: short distances, flat terrain and moderate traffic. Mountain itineraries like Munduk → Singaraja or Ubud → Sidemen → Besakih require more riding confidence. Rental guide → · Road safety →
