On a map, Bali looks tiny. On the road, it's another story: 25 km can take 30 minutes at dawn and well over an hour in late afternoon. Here are the real road distances and travel times between the island's 12 most visited spots, so you can plan a realistic road trip.

Why it often takes longer than expected
- Rush hours: in the south (Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Denpasar) and around Ubud, traffic builds in the morning and especially in late afternoon.
- Narrow roads: much of the network is single-lane each way, with no chance to overtake a truck or bus.
- Ceremonies: a procession can close a road for half an hour or so; it happens often and is part of the trip.
- Mountains: towards Kintamani, Munduk or Sidemen, bends and gradients cut the average speed sharply.
On a scooter you can slip through southern traffic far more easily, and the gap with a car can be large at rush hour. On long mountain stretches, though, a car with a driver is more restful. Our scooter or driver comparison covers that choice in detail.
Planning your days
- Leave early: before 7am, southern roads are still clear and the light is beautiful.
- Avoid crossing the south between 4pm and 7pm if you have a choice.
- For the east (Amed, Sidemen) or the north (Lovina, Munduk), plan a night there rather than a day return.
- Download the offline map on Google Maps: signal can drop in the mountains. See our SIM & apps guide.
Our 7 itineraries sometimes show a slightly longer distance than this table: they go via several stops (beaches, temples, waterfalls) instead of the direct road.

Distances and "no traffic" times were calculated on 8 October 2026 with the OSRM routing engine, using road data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL licence), averaging both directions. The "daytime" time is a BaliRoads estimate: we multiply the no-traffic time by 1.7 to 2.5 to account for congestion and slow roads. These are ballpark figures: check your route on the day with a navigation app.
